Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Jill Scott was raised by both her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. She took secondary school classes there while working two jobs. Her dream was to become an English teacher in high school. She was unable to fulfill her dream, however, when after three years of studying while working as a teacher assistant, she left college. She began her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works during live poetry readings. She eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. At an Roots show she made her debut as an artist. Later, she secured collaborations stars like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as a performer during her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
